The science: what "sunburn" actually is
A sunburn is an inflammatory response to UV-induced DNA damage in your skin cells. The standard medical measurement is the minimal erythemal dose (MED) — the smallest amount of UV radiation that produces visible redness 24 hours after exposure. MED is measured in joules per square meter (J/m²), and it varies by an order of magnitude across skin types.
The 1988 Fitzpatrick classification, still used by every major dermatology body, divides skin into six types based on how it responds to sun. Type I (very fair, always burns, never tans) has an MED of roughly 200 J/m². Type VI (deeply pigmented) has an MED of roughly 1,000 J/m² or higher. How sunscreen extends the window
