Fitzpatrick Skin Type
The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin into 6 types (I–VI) based on burn-vs-tan response to sun exposure.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type explained
It was developed in 1975 by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick at Harvard for dosing UV phototherapy. Types I and II burn easily; V and VI rarely burn. Modern dermatology uses it as a starting point but acknowledges its limits — skin cancer risk depends on genetics, history, and cumulative dose, not skin tone alone.
